There have been two legionella out breaks in as many months the latest being Stoke on Trent.

I have contacted the various manufacturers and suppliers for information regarding this terrible virus and consensus of opinion is there is a very low risk of Legionella in standard split system style air conditioning; this is mainly an issue with large industrial systems that use Cooling Towers.

Each system should however be regally maintained and the drain-trays should be kept clear and clean to prevent any bacteria build-up, The condensation from cooling is removed from the system during operation under normal circumstances so there is no stagnant water which is where legionaella is usually an issue.

As a precaution during maintenance visit tablets can be dropped in to the drain tray to help prevent bacteria growth or odours.

PRA now use these tablets as a matter of routine during maintenance visits.

Tweets/facebook

PRA are investigating an apartment building in Enfield after a compressor failure.

We have quoted a Walsall LLP company for replacement air conditioning systems in their offices.

Paul is attending a Birmingham medical centre in need of advice for temperature control in a rented building, sounds a difficult one as they can’t have standard fixed air conditioning.

PRA Air Conditioning makes sweet music with the City of Birmingham Symphany Orchestra we have attended the CBSO building to make sure their air conditioning system is as it should be.

Refrigeration installation of condensing units in Birmingham, proved a difficult one as we were called in to put right on arrival the condensers had been put up back to front.

Installation of R22 system in Haulage Company Birmingham.

Repair of refrigerant leak at Animal Hospital Treatment Room.

Kidderminster Garage refit meant moving an indoor unit 3ft to the left of its original installed position I do not know how we managed it.

Installation of air conditioning and duct work at new Waterstones Store in Norwich.

Office relocation Paul has visited Birmingham company to assist them in their desire to move existing air conditioning systems and re-install them in new office location.

Sunshine can be heard across Worcestershire and Herefordshire and on Capital One Birmingham.

Paul had a bit of a head scratcher when designing an installation for a conservatory Sir was very keen Madam wasn’t. The look of the air conditioning was very important as was the size as it was a relatively small conservatory 8 x 10 but thanks to the Daikin Nexura it was a perfect match and all is now bliss in that particular household.

Pauls off to the ‘smoke’ tomorrow he will be good and early to beat the traffic and out early to beat it on the way home. A couple of air conditioning quotes to be done, a maintenance to be carried out for one of our clients and a service call to the gym, can’t see him working out anything except the price.

1. Classrooms

IT rooms can become stifling with an average of 20+ pupils per class in schools, colleges and Universities. With numerous heat-generating machines also in these rooms, the answer is air conditioning, which can be regulated to suit the desired temperature when the IT stations are working at full capacity.

2.	Offices

24/7/10 - Email to H R – Can you please sort out the air con It’s too cold!!!
24/7/10 - Email to H R – Can you sort out the air con it’s too hot in here!!

It is so difficult to get a room full of people to experience the same degree of temperature in an air conditioned room set at 22 deg c some staff will complain they are cold while others are just fine. Installing additional units into an open plan office, which are all individually controlled is the ultimate in reducing those emails to HR.

3.	Server Rooms

You may already have had the foresight to install an air conditioner into your server room and find it adequate but your business has grown you have additional servers have you thought about the air conditioning being able to cope with the increase in heat loads also think very hard about installing a backup unit if one should fail the other is set up to come into force to maintain the temperature until you can get an engineer out.

4.	Upgrading

Look at your systems how old are they?

New inverter systems are energy efficient and produce low carbon, low carbon means low running costs so that is saving you money also the government have schemes in place where you could claim tax back on improving your energy consumption the ECA scheme is one.

6. Do they run on the soon to be banned R22 refrigerant gas?

R22 is a bad ozone depleting gas and the EU has put in place a timetable for its planned phase out

Production and supply of new air conditioning systems operating on R22 was banned in 2004.
Legislation bans the supply of new R22 refrigerant used to service equipment from 31st December 2009.
Only reclaimed or recycled R22 refrigerant may be used from January 2010 until 31st December 2014.
Systems operating on R22 refrigerant will be classed as “not serviceable” from December 2014.
A complete ban of R22 refrigerant, including reclaimed or recycled will be effective on 31st December 2014.
When a commodity is in low demand the costs are guaranteed to increase, the cost of R22 refrigerant is expected to quadruple in price year on year and analysts are predicting we will run out of recycled R22 refrigerant by 2013.

If you have systems running on this gas look at how you can replace it for more efficient energy saving systems and maybe also get help from the government to do it via ECA, or leasing new equipment could be a way to go for you.
R22 replacement

5. Are they regularly maintained?

Maintenance is not a luxury it is a must have product for company’s as new legislation has come into play for buildings to be energy efficient it includes your air con systems which must be regularly maintained if you have 3kgs of refrigerant or more in your building these systems must also have had a TM44 inspection.

For more information see School & Office Air Conditioning

Recent media reports have focused on a major department store in Birmingham City Centre, which experienced problems keeping staff and customers cool when its air conditioning failed. The press article titled "Shoppers Fainting in Heatwave" reported that the stores air conditioning broke down as temperatures soared towards 30 degrees C, with customers seen "swooning" from the sweltering heat. People reported that staff had felt ill, with some passing out in the heat. Fans put in place to try and counteract the problem appeared to be insufficient to control the soaring temperatures.

PRA Air Conditioning have delivered effective preventative air conditioning maintenance and servicing schedules for a large range of retail outlets, dental surgeries and office premises. To help retail businesses and leisure facilities keep conditions comfortable for both visiting customers and staff we have put together a specific maintenance program, usually carried out during spring and autumn, but with flexible timeframes to suit. This service is available across the UK including Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Cheltenham, Worcester, Cardiff, Bristol, Devon, Oxford and London. The systems are designed to help prevent the problems experienced by some retail outlets in the recent heatwave across the UK.

As the British Summer goes through a period of more familiar rain, the events of a few weeks ago show that there is no room for complacency. With more hot weather around the corner regular maintenance checks are important, especially with competing businesses all too pleased in the current climate to provide a comfortable environment for your retail customers.
