Why is Air Conditioning in Gyms is Important
Perhaps the most important criteria for gym-goers – second only to equipment selection – is that of comfort. Members of your gym want to feel comfortable and at ease when they conduct an intense workout session: a temperate environment with clean and dehumidified air goes a long way in securing the reputation of your gym as a hygienic and welcoming place to workout.
A consistent and regular temperature is also good for the health and safety of your members and staff. In a hot, busy environment – without AC regulated airflow and temperature control – where countless people are getting their sweat on, dehydration and heat exhaustion can become real possibilities. On the other hand, during the winter months, your gym may become excessively cold, which can prevent effective warmup and stretching routines, leading to potential injuries – particularly to spinal, knee and shoulder joints.
Much like consistency is key to muscle building, weight loss and strength training, maintaining a consistent workout environment is crucial for gym owners to maintain. Regular gym-goers want the peace of mind and confidence to know that machines are in order, changing rooms are clean and that the overall atmosphere is conducive to a worthwhile workout. Nothing can put a damper on a workout like a smelly gym or a weight room that is too hot or cold – each variable can affect a workout in different ways. Installing an effective air conditioning unit can go a long way in alleviating such a phenomenon and maintaining consistent membership over the lifetime of your gym.

Ventilation Vs Air Conditioning: Is There a Difference?
Yes, in short, there is a difference between the two systems.
Visually speaking, if a gym happens to have many pipes and ‘spouts’ along the ceiling, this is more-often-than-not a ventilation system: bringing in cool, fresh air from the outside – not inherently regulating temperature via heating or cooling. Though these types of ventilation systems can have electric heating installed within the ducting to prevent the incoming air from being too cold, they are optional and there is no guarantee that a gym with such ventilation systems is a comfortable environment to work out.
Air conditioning, on the other hand, provides clean and temperate air to a gym whilst working actively to remove humidity and bacteria from the air thanks to excessive, collective perspiration. We believe that installing an active air conditioning system in a fitness environment is far more advisable than a passive ventilation system in maintaining the longevity of commercial success and reputation amongst your paying customers.
Common Types of Air Conditioning For Gyms
Choosing the most appropriate type of air conditioning system for your gym or fitness environment is crucial, often determined by the size and space of your establishment. The internal space of the gym will also play a role as to whether the system is to be wall-mounted or an externally-house AC unit.

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) – Larger Settings
Gyms and other fitness centres of a larger size would hugely benefit from a VRF system that is connected to the indoors whilst it is housed on the roof of the building.
A VRF system can maintain a comfortable workout environment via cooling or heating, also delivering a consistent airflow and dehumidification whilst requiring very little maintenance.

Split Air Conditioning (SAC) – Smaller Settings
Smaller fitness spaces may benefit from Split Air Conditioning systems which allows you, as the gym owner, to connect multiple indoor AC units but alter settings independently – allowing one room to be warmer or cooler than another.
Typically managed and controlled by wall-mounted thermostats or control panels, meaning that temperatures are adjustable mid-session.
Though they may require slightly more hand-on maintenance than a VRF system, SAC solutions are quiet and energy-efficient.
